Hello Carlsbad Unified School District families,

I would like to invite you to participate in a number of community-related events in February and March.

First, please bring out your warrior spirit to help children battling life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders by participating in the 9th Annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation 5K on Saturday, February 3rd at 8:30 a.m. It will take place at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad. There will be a family fun festival and great prizes for all ages at the event. We encourage you to show your school spirit by joining your school’s team. You can sign up with your friends and family by going to mitchellthorp.org.

Second, please join Kids for Peace and the Great Kindness Challenge for a Community Pep Rally on Tuesday, February 6th at 3:30 pm. The Rally will be held at the Stadium at Carlsbad High School. This will be the culminating activity in this year’s Great Kindness Challenge, which was started here in Carlsbad and has been featured on Good Morning America and many other media outlets. We hope you’ll come out to be part of the fun, and to help remind the world that Kindness Matters.

Finally, we hope you’ll participate in two events benefiting the Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF). The 2018 Celebrate Carlsbad Day will take place on Saturday, March 3 at Legoland; discounted tickets can be purchased at carlsbaded.org, and all proceeds go to support our robotics programs for all 2nd grade students in Carlsbad Unified schools. Also, please sign up now for CEF’s 4th Annual Pedal for a Purpose, to be held on Saturday, March 24 at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. Come on out and “SPIN for our Schools” - the funds raised support music and STEM programs across the district. You can learn more at carlsbaded.org.

The highlights:

  • The Mitchell Thorp 5K on Saturday, February 3 at 8:30 am at Poinsettia Park;

  • The Great Kindness Challenge Community Rally on Tuesday, February 6th at 3:30 pm at Carlsbad High;

  • The 2018 Celebrate Carlsbad Day at Legoland on March 3;

Helen Woodward Animal Center is seeking volunteers for their Winter Critter Camps.

Volunteers must be mature, dependable, be able to follow directions, work independently, and display introductory leadership and teamwork skills. The most successful volunteers are committed, enthusiastic and experienced with children. Volunteers should have some previous experience working with children
and a desire to work with Pre K – 6th grades.

Winter Break Critter Camp will take place for three weeks; Week 1 is December 18th – 22nd;

Week 2 is December 26th – 29th (NO CAMP MONDAY, 12/25); Week 3 is January 2nd – 5th(NO CAMP MONDAY, 1/01).

Volunteer shifts are from 8:00 am-3:30 pm each day so you must be available from 8:00am - 3:30pm each day you volunteer. There are also 2 openings from 9:00am-5:00pm. We cannot accommodate partial volunteer days. This is a smaller camp; therefore, we have more flexibility with scheduling volunteer shifts. It would be great if you are available for a full week of camp
but if that is not a possibility, any day(s) you are available is fine.

*Applicants must be in 9th – 12th grade as of Fall of 2017 and between the ages of 14 – 17.* You must complete a volunteer application and return it to Laurie Doyle, Volunteer Coordinator.

Click Here for the volunteer application and more information regarding the camps, mandatory training dates and where to submit your application.
